What this commission calculator does
- Basic: commission = total sales × commission rate, plus an optional base salary.
- Intermediate: tiered commission with three rates: Tier 1 on sales from $0 to $10,000, Tier 2 from $10,000 to $30,000, and Tier 3 on sales above $30,000.
- Advanced: adds a monthly quota, a bonus that is paid once sales reach a threshold, and the sales needed to reach a target monthly income.
How it is calculated
In a tiered plan each slice of your sales earns the rate for its tier, so the higher rate applies only to the sales above the tier boundary, not to all of your sales.
Worked examples: $50,000 of sales at 5% is $2,500 commission, or $4,500 with a $2,000 base salary. For tiered sales of $45,000 at 5%, 7% and 10%, the commission is $500 (first $10,000) + $1,400 (next $20,000) + $1,500 (last $15,000) = $3,400, an average rate of 7.56%.
In the Advanced tab, a base of $3,000, a 4% rate, $60,000 of sales, a $1,000 bonus at $55,000 and a $50,000 quota give total earnings of $6,400 and 120% of quota. To reach an $8,000 target you would need $100,000 of sales.
Things to keep in mind
The tier boundaries ($10,000 and $30,000) are fixed in this calculator. The sales needed for a target income counts a bonus only if your current sales already reach the bonus threshold. Real commission plans often include caps, clawbacks or other terms that are not modelled here. These results are estimates for general information only and are not financial, tax or legal advice. Frequently asked questions
Is a tiered rate applied to all my sales?
No. Each portion of your sales is paid at the rate for the tier it falls in.
Can I enter a 0% rate or a $0 base salary?
Yes. Zero is accepted for rates, base salary and the first tier.
