What this invoice calculator does
- Basic: hours × hourly rate, then a discount percentage, then tax, to the total due.
- Intermediate: add as many line items as you need (description, quantity and rate), then apply a discount, a tax rate and shipping or other fees.
- Advanced: project value plus reimbursable expenses and tax, less a deposit already paid, with a payment schedule for Net 15, 30, 45 or 60 day terms and one to four installments.
How it is calculated
The discount is taken off the subtotal first, and tax is then calculated on the discounted amount. Shipping or other fees in the Intermediate tab are added after tax and are not taxed by the calculator.
Worked examples: 40 hours at $75 is $3,000. A 10% discount takes off $300, and 8% tax on the remaining $2,700 adds $216, so the total is $2,916. In the Advanced tab, a $10,000 project with $500 of expenses and 5% tax comes to $11,025, and after a $2,000 deposit the balance is $9,025.
Things to keep in mind
Tax rules for invoices differ by country, state and type of work, so enter the rate that applies to you. Payment dates are counted from today’s date. This is a calculator, not a tax or accounting tool. These results are estimates for general information only and are not financial, tax or legal advice. Check important figures with a qualified professional.
Frequently asked questions
Is tax applied before or after the discount?
After. The calculator discounts the subtotal first and applies tax to the discounted amount.
Can I remove a line item?
Yes. Use the Remove button beside the line. Totals are recalculated when you press Calculate.
