What this sales tax calculator does
- Basic: price and tax rate to the tax amount, the total and the effective rate.
- Intermediate: add tax to a price, remove tax from a total, or find the implied tax rate between a pre-tax and a post-tax amount.
- Advanced: up to four tax rates (state, county, city and special district) with a quantity, showing each one’s tax and its share of the total tax.
The formulas
| Calculation | Formula |
|---|---|
| Add tax | tax = price × rate ÷ 100; total = price + tax |
| Remove tax | price before tax = total ÷ (1 + rate ÷ 100) |
| Implied rate | (second amount − first amount) ÷ first amount × 100 |
Worked examples: $100 at 8.25% adds $8.25 for a total of $108.25. A tax-inclusive total of $107 at 7% was $100.00 before tax, with $7.00 of tax. Two items at $100 with state 6%, county 1% and city 0.5% make $200 with 7.5% combined tax, which is $15.00: $12.00 state (80%), $2.00 county (13.3%) and $1.00 city (6.7%).
Things to keep in mind
You enter the tax rate yourself. The calculator does not look up rates for a location, and sales tax and VAT rules, exemptions and rounding differ by place and by product. Check the rate with your tax authority. These results are estimates for general information only and are not financial, tax or legal advice. Check important figures with a qualified professional.
