What this tip calculator does

  • Basic: bill, tip percentage and number of people to the tip, the total, and each person’s share.
  • Intermediate: choose whether to tip on the total or the pre-tax amount, enter tax and a discount or coupon, pick a service type and rate the service.
  • Advanced: splits a bill with shared items and an included service charge, in US, euro, pound, Canadian or Australian dollar symbols, with CSV export and a regional tipping guide.

How it is calculated

Tip = tip base × tip percentage. The tip base is the bill (or the pre-tax amount if you choose that). If you enter a discount or coupon, the tip is calculated on the amount before the discount. In the Advanced tab, no tip is added on a service charge that is already on the bill, and shared items are split evenly.

Worked examples: a $100 bill with an 18% tip for 4 people is a $18 tip and a $118 total, or $29.50 each. A $110 bill that includes $10 of tax, tipped 20% on the pre-tax amount, has a $20 tip. A $120 bill with $30 of shared items, an 18% tip and 3 people gives a $21.60 tip, a $141.60 total, and $47.20 each: $30 for their own food, $10 for the shared items and $7.20 of tip.

Things to keep in mind

Changing the currency changes only the symbol shown. It does not convert amounts. Tipping customs differ widely between countries and services, and the regional guide is general information only, so check local practice. This calculator is a convenience tool and not financial advice.

Frequently asked questions

Should I tip on the pre-tax or the total amount?
Both are common. The Intermediate tab lets you choose either.

How are shared items split?
