What this GPA calculator does

  • Semester GPA: add each course with its grade and credits to get the semester GPA, total credits and grade distribution. You can pick a 4.0, 5.0 or 10.0 scale or percentages.
  • Cumulative GPA: combines your current GPA and credits with a new semester (0 to 4.0 scale).
  • Target GPA: shows the GPA you need in your remaining credits to reach a goal, and how realistic that is (0 to 4.0 scale).
  • Grade Converter: converts between a letter grade, the 4.0 scale, a percentage and a 10-point scale.

How it is calculated

  • Semester GPA = total of (grade points × credits) ÷ total credits.
  • Cumulative GPA = (current GPA × current credits + new GPA × new credits) ÷ total credits.
  • Required GPA = (target GPA × total credits − current grade points) ÷ remaining credits.

Worked examples: an A (4.0) in a 3-credit course and a B (3.0) in a 4-credit course give (12 + 12) ÷ 7 = 3.43. A 3.0 over 60 credits followed by a 4.0 over 30 credits gives (180 + 120) ÷ 90 = 3.33. To move from 3.0 over 60 credits to 3.5 over 120 credits you would need a 4.00 in the remaining 60 credits.

Things to keep in mind

The Grade Converter uses one common US-style scale, for example 90% and above as 4.0 (A) and 80% to 82% as 3.0 (B). Schools, universities and countries use different scales and rounding, so check your institution’s official policy. If the GPA you need is above 4.0, the calculator will tell you the target is not reachable with the credits remaining.
