Work out how much flooring to buy: the area of one room or several, with a waste allowance for cuts, how many boxes that is, and what the project might cost.

Flooring Material Guidelines
Waste Factor Recommendations:
- Tile (straight pattern): 5-10% waste
- Tile (diagonal/offset): 15-20% waste
- Hardwood/Laminate: 10-15% waste
- Carpet: 10-15% waste
- Vinyl plank: 5-10% waste
Important Tips:
- Always measure twice and add waste for cuts and mistakes
- Consider room layout and pattern when calculating waste
- Account for closets, hallways, and irregular spaces
- Buy extra material for future repairs
- Standard box coverage: 20-30 sq ft (varies by manufacturer)
What this flooring calculator does
- Square/Rectangle: length and width with a waste factor, in feet, metres or yards, with an estimate of boxes.
- Multiple Rooms: add as many rooms as you need and get one combined area with waste.
- Irregular Shape: enter a measured total area and your own coverage per box.
- Cost Estimator: area with waste × material and labour cost per square foot, plus additional costs.
How it is calculated
Area with waste = length × width × (1 + waste %). Waste is 5% for tile in a straight lay, 10% for standard layouts, 15% for diagonal or complex layouts, and 20% or more for intricate patterns. Boxes are the area with waste divided by the coverage of one box, rounded up.
In the Square/Rectangle tab the “Measurement Unit” sets the unit you enter the length and width in (feet, metres or yards), and the area is shown in the matching square unit. Boxes are estimated at 25 square feet each, converted to your unit.
Worked examples: a 12 ft × 10 ft room with 10% waste is 132 sq ft, or 6 boxes. Two rooms of 12 × 10 ft and 8 × 8 ft add up to 184 sq ft, or 202.4 sq ft with 10% waste. An irregular 200 sq ft area with 15% waste is 230 sq ft, or 12 boxes of 20 sq ft. At $4 material and $3 labour per square foot with 10% waste and $100 of other costs, 200 sq ft costs $1,640.
Things to keep in mind
The 25 square feet per box in the Square/Rectangle tab is an assumption. Check the coverage printed on the box of the flooring you choose, and use the Irregular Shape tab if you want to enter it yourself. These are planning estimates only. Measure your own project carefully, check product labels and local building codes, and confirm quantities with your supplier or a qualified contractor before you buy.
