What this budget calculator does

  • Basic: after-tax income and your main expenses to the amount left over, your savings rate and a budget health indicator.
  • Intermediate: several income sources, fixed and variable expenses, and savings goals, to the amount available for savings.
  • Advanced: annual gross income, an estimated tax rate, bonus and spending percentages to a recommended monthly savings amount, retirement readiness and a financial health score.

How it is calculated

Remaining budget = total income − total expenses, and savings rate = remaining budget ÷ income. In the Advanced tab, net income = gross income × (1 − tax rate) plus any bonus. The recommended savings rate is the larger of 20% or whatever is left after your housing, food, transport and discretionary percentages.

Worked examples: $4,500 of income and $2,900 of expenses leaves $1,600, a 35.6% savings rate. In the Intermediate tab, $5,000 of income, $2,100 of fixed expenses (housing, utilities, insurance and loan payments) and $950 of variable expenses leaves $1,950 for savings.

Things to keep in mind

The 20% minimum savings rate and the financial health score are the calculator’s own rules of thumb, not standards, and the tax rate is your estimate. The Advanced tab needs a retirement age higher than your current age. These results are estimates for general information only and are not financial, tax, investment or legal advice. Real products have fees, rules and rates that differ, so check the details with your lender, provider or a qualified adviser.
